🎶 Ethical AI music: a new partnership
If you're a content creator who has been hankering to try generating music with AI, but not wanting to rip off human musicians by using an unethical tool, here's some good news for you!
Earlier this year, we profiled 9 companies using AI for music who had acquired certifications as ‘Fairly Trained’. On December 3, 2024, two of them announced a new partnership for 2025 that they claim will create the “first fully licensed, rightsholder-compensating, generative AI platform” trained on copyrighted music and other audio.
The partners describe their new music generator as “completely legal and licensed” and say that rights holders (musicians, composers, producers) will receive revenue shares based on model usage.
The two partners are:
Musical AI (formerly SOMMS.AI; profiled here) - Canada-based company focused on AI training content licensing and attribution
Beatoven.ai (profiled here) - India-based company that provides royalty-free AI-powered music for content creators
The announcement on the Beatoven.ai website states:
“The new service will train its AI model on a substantial dataset of three million properly licensed songs, loops, samples, and sounds. Musical AI will manage the rights and handle payments to copyright holders, while Beatoven.ai will develop the technical aspects of the music generator.”
Initially, the new tool will be offered exclusively by Musical AI to its enterprise customers, as a white-label service. It is expected to launch in “late 2025”.
Stay tuned for more news in ethical AI for music. Happy Friday!
